Settling In

Every day has been a new adventure since we arrived here in Copenhagen, Denmark, a little more than a week ago! We flew from Detroit to Newark on August 4th so we could spend several days with Jeff, Becky, Cora, and Kylie. Then from Newark, we flew thru London to Copenhagen and arrived on August 8th. We were happily greeted by our former exchange student Ida who had a big smile and a Danish flag to greet us!  She then helped us figure out how to take the train into the city and move our suitcases over the bumpy cobblestone sidewalks and up the five flights of stairs to our home for the next 6 weeks. She showed us a bit of town and took us to an outdoor food court by the water for dinner, keeping us moving so we could more quickly adjust to Danish time.

We are enjoying our AirBnB apartment: it is nice and light with windows on two sides; two small balconies overlook a surprisingly pleasant parking lot. The windows on the other side look over a park with benches, tables, grills, and play equipment.  And the location is great, right in the middle of the city, although far enough from a lot of the hustle and bustle that we can sleep at night with windows open. I had time on my hands this morning so I counted: within 5 minutes walk, we have 44 restaurants, 6 grocery stores, 4 coffee shops, 3 bakeries, and a Chess store!  One block away is an art museum and the Rosenborg Castle Gardens. Most other interesting sights are within 25 minutes walk: Rosenborg Castle, Amalienborg Palace (where the royals live), Christiansborg Castle (where Parliament meets), Nyhavn Harbor, the Little Mermaid statue, and Tivoli Gardens.

It will be a 20 minute walk from this apartment to work for Chuck when he starts tomorrow.  From our more permanent apartment where we will be starting September 18th, it will be a 7 minute walk!

We have been using this time before his official work start to explore the city.  It is the height of tourist season, while the weather is still good and the days are long, and the sidewalk cafes are overflowing with happy people.

  1. Kathy - what a great location. The walkability speaks to me very much. Forty-four restaurants seems nearly impossible! The apartment has a lovely Scandinavian feel.
